HispanicPhD Mailing List: In 2008 the HispanicPhD mailing list was co-founded by Dr. Manuel Perez-Quinones and myself. I am currently the administrator for the list. The stated purpose of the list is: to bring together graduate students, professors and researchers in the Computing Sciences with a particular focus on Hispanics. The list will facilitate the dissemination of opportunities for Hispanics/Latinos, as well as events, conferences, workshops, opportunities, announcements, news and opinions to all interested individuals. I encourage you to read further and subscribe at http://www.cs.fiu.edu/mailman/listinfo.cgi/hispanicphd

Today’s Word Is…, A website dedicated to educating people by emailing a vocabulary word every day of the week. The Site is run by Mr. Dictionary, a lifelong afficionado of languages who is currently enjoying retirement in a mountain laiden region of the world. This list has been in existence since 2001. I became involved in 2006 when I was asked to donate time in helping maintain the website. Visit and sign up with Mr. Dictionary today!

OrchidMania South Florida is an all-volunteer group of amateur orchid growers who use their hobby to raise money for children affected and infected with HIV/AIDS in the South Florida community. They are proud to be the first “sister” organization of the original OrchidMania group founded in San Francisco in 1989. They started the group as a result of Dade County, Florida having the second highest AIDS infection rate in the country. I became a volunteer with the group in 2008 by rebuilding their website and organizing volunteer groups to help maintain their greenhouse. I am an avid orchid grower and have learned alot from them plus made great new friends as well. Learn more about the organization and visiting the greenhouse at http://www.orchidmania.org

The Cuban Genealogy Club of South Florida was founded in 2000. I am one of the co-founders. We all met as a result of visiting the same websites for our personal seraches to populate our genealogy trees. The organization is still active today and meets several times a year in Miami. Visit their website at http://www.cubangenclub.org

Cuban Cultural Heritage is an organization based in Miami, Florida that is dedicated to preserving the cultural history of Cuban.  The bi-annual magazine Herencia is an excellent source of knowledge about Cuba’s past.  They hold several cultural events throughout the year adn work with other organizations such as the University of Miami and Miami-Dade community college.  I was involved with them from 2000-2006 as their website admin and computer technician.  Their website states: Cuban Cultural Heritage is a non profit organization dedicated to educate, preserve and foster cultural and historical values of the Cuban Nation for present and future generations.  You can subscribe to recieve the magazine, it is very affordable and worthwhile: http://www.herenciaculturalcubana.org/
